The Standard

Apply mathematics to real-world contexts. Mathematicians who apply mathematics to real-world contexts: Connect mathematical concepts to everyday experiences. Use models and methods to understand, represent and solve problems. Perform investigations to gather data or determine if a method is appropriate. Redesign models and methods to improve accuracy or efficiency.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a real situation into a mathematical question. They choose useful quantities and create a diagram, table, graph, equation, or other model. They test whether the result makes sense, then revise their method when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify useful information, make reasonable assumptions, and select a model that fits the situation. They calculate accurately, explain what the answer means, and improve their approach using evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use every number given, choose an operation from a keyword, or report a number without units. They may trust an inaccurate model, ignore unreasonable results, or revise calculations without explaining why the change helps.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Plan a class snack for 28 students with a $35 budget. Show a model, state one assumption, and explain how you checked your plan.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cups, rulers, and a pitcher, then have them predict, measure, and revise a method for serving equal amounts.

  2. Ask, “When does a map, graph, or equation leave out something that matters?” Students defend one example in writing.

  3. Run a Model Match game where teams pair situation cards with tables, graphs, diagrams, or equations, then justify each match.

  4. Use a grocery receipt and fixed budget, then have students propose a purchase plan and revise it after a price change.
