What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify whether a situation uses interest based only on the starting amount, periodic compounding, or continuous growth. They substitute the principal, annual rate, time, and compounding frequency into the correct formula. They find a balance or interest amount and compare options.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can translate a percent rate into decimal form and select the correct formula from a written situation. They calculate accurately, label money values, and explain how time and compounding frequency affect the result.

Common Misconceptions

Students may apply the annual rate as a whole number instead of converting it to a decimal. They often confuse total balance with interest earned, or forget to multiply the exponent by the compounding frequency and time. Some treat continuous growth as monthly growth instead of using e.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A $2,000 deposit earns 6% for four years. Find the ending balance with simple interest, monthly compounding, and continuous compounding, then identify the largest.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs principal, rate, time, and method cards; students match each set to a formula and calculate the balance with calculators.

  2. Prompt: Which matters more over 20 years, a higher rate or more frequent compounding? Defend your claim with two calculations.

  3. Run a formula relay where teams draw scenario cards, choose a model, compute the result, and earn a point only after checking units.

  4. Compare three savings account offers for a $1,000 deposit over one and ten years, then write which offer fits each timeline.
