What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students feed the output of one function into another and keep the order clear. They evaluate, write, and solve compositions using equations, tables, graphs, and real situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly evaluate compositions from formulas, tables, and graphs. They can write a composite rule, solve an equation involving it, and explain what each stage means in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the order and treat f(g(x)) as g(f(x)). They may multiply the functions instead of substituting, or forget to check whether an input is allowed. In context problems, they may apply fees, discounts, or conversions in the wrong order.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: A delivery costs C(m) = 2m + 5 dollars, then tax is T(c) = 1.06c. Find and interpret T(C(10)).

Ways to Teach It
Build paper function machines with input cards, send each output into a second machine, and record the resulting ordered pairs.
Discuss: Why can f(g(x)) and g(f(x)) give different answers, and when might they match?
Run a card sort matching pairs of functions with composite rules, tables, and evaluated outputs.
Model a store discount followed by sales tax, then calculate the final price and explain why the order matters.
