What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use different rules for different input intervals to represent a situation. They graph each piece, solve for requested values, and interpret rates, endpoints, breaks, domains, and ranges within the context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students graph each rule on the correct interval and mark endpoints accurately. They solve for an input or output using the valid branch, then explain rates, intercepts, breaks, and domain limits in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often extend every rule across the full graph or switch rules at the wrong input. They confuse open and closed endpoints, use an invalid branch when solving, or ignore limits from the situation.
How to Assess It
- Give students C(t)=8 for 0<t≤1 and C(t)=8+5(t−1) for 1<t≤4. Ask them to graph it, find C(3.5), state the domain, and explain both endpoint symbols.

Ways to Teach It
Use string and labeled endpoint cards to build separate graph pieces on a taped coordinate grid, then connect each piece to its rule.
Ask students to explain how an open endpoint changes the meaning of a parking fee at exactly two hours.
Play a matching game with cards showing piecewise rules, graphs, domains, and short situations such as shipping fees or ticket prices.
Compare two phone plans with different data tiers, graph each cost function, and find which plan is cheaper for given usage amounts.
