Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.AR.2.5

MathGrades 9–12Write, solve and graph linear equations, functions and inequalities in one and two variables.

The Standard

Solve and graph mathematical and real-world problems that are modeled with linear functions. Interpret key features and determine constraints in terms of the context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write or use a linear function, solve for unknown values, and graph the relationship. They interpret slope, intercepts, and other features, then limit the domain and range to values that make sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write an equation from a situation, graph the relevant part, and solve for an unknown input or output. The student correctly explains the slope, intercepts, and limits using the quantities and units in the problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse the starting value with the rate of change or switch the roles of the variables. They may graph the full line when time, distance, or item counts must be nonnegative. They may also ignore whole-number restrictions for quantities such as tickets or people.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A rental bike costs $12 plus $4 per hour. Write and graph the function, find the cost for 5 hours, and state reasonable constraints.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure the height of stacks of one through six cups, graph the data, write a function, and restrict the domain to whole numbers.

  2. Have students explain the slope, intercept, and valid time interval in a graph of water draining from a tank.

  3. Run a card sort matching four situations with their equations, graphs, solutions, and domain restrictions; require students to justify each match.

  4. Use local bus fare and distance data to model trip cost, then find the farthest trip possible with a set budget.
