What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count outcomes by adding separate options or multiplying choices made in stages. They use those totals to solve probability questions in mathematical and real-world settings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose addition for separate alternatives and multiplication for choices made in stages. They organize outcomes with lists, tables, or tree diagrams and use those counts to find probabilities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add counts for sequential choices or multiply counts for either-or choices. They may double-count overlapping options or assume every outcome is equally likely.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A lunch has 3 sandwich choices and 2 drink choices, while a snack is either 4 fruits or 3 chips. Find each total and the probability of choosing one specific lunch.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored cubes and number cards to build every two-stage outcome, then record the outcomes in a table.
Ask students to explain why sandwich-or-salad choices are added, while sandwich-and-drink choices are multiplied.
Run a card sort where teams classify counting situations as add or multiply, solve each card, and justify every choice.
Have students design a food truck menu, count possible meals, and find the probability that a random meal meets a given condition.
