Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.8.GR.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.8.GR.2.1
Given a preimage and image generated by a single transformation, identify the transformation that describes the relationship.
- MA.8.GR.2.2
Given a preimage and image generated by a single dilation, identify the scale factor that describes the relationship.
- MA.8.GR.2.3
Describe and apply the effect of a single transformation on two-dimensional figures using coordinates and the coordinate plane.
- MA.8.GR.2.4
Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving proportional relationships between similar triangles.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations to compare figures. They decide whether figures have equal measurements or proportional measurements and explain the transformation sequence that connects them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe a sequence of transformations that maps one figure onto another. They use corresponding angles, side lengths, and scale factors to justify whether figures are congruent, similar, or neither.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rotated or reflected figures are different because their orientation changed. They may confuse a dilation with adding the same amount to each side or match noncorresponding vertices.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Triangle A has vertices (0,0), (2,0), (0,2), and Triangle B has vertices (1,1), (5,1), (1,5). Decide whether they are congruent or similar, then describe transformations mapping A to B.

Ways to Teach It
Trace a polygon on patty paper, then slide, turn, flip, and resize copies to test which changes preserve lengths and angles.
Ask students to explain why a reflected triangle can remain congruent even when its vertices appear in a different clockwise order.
Run a card sort matching figure pairs with transformation sequences, scale factors, and labels of congruent, similar, or neither.
Compare an original photo with printed enlargements, then measure corresponding lengths and determine which copies kept the same proportions.
