What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students graph a two-dimensional figure and its image after one translation, reflection, rotation, or dilation. They use coordinate changes to describe where the figure moved and whether its orientation or size changed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly graph an image after one translation, reflection, rotation, or dilation. They give accurate coordinates and explain changes in location, orientation, shape, and size.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change the wrong coordinate when reflecting or translating a figure. They often confuse clockwise and counterclockwise rotations or multiply side lengths but not coordinates during a dilation.
How to Assess It
- Give students triangle A(1, 2), B(4, 2), C(2, 5). Ask them to rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise about the origin, list the new coordinates, and describe what changed.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a transparent coordinate grid and tracing paper to slide, flip, turn, or resize a drawn polygon, then record its new coordinates.
Ask students to compare a figure and its image, then write which transformation occurred and cite two coordinate clues.
Play transformation bingo using cards with coordinate rules, diagrams, and named transformations that students must match.
Use a simple map grid to move, reflect, rotate, or scale a park logo, then describe its new placement and size.
