MA.3.M.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

• MA.3.M.1.1

  Select and use appropriate tools to measure the length of an object, the volume of liquid within a beaker and temperature.

• MA.3.M.1.2

  Solve real-world problems involving any of the four operations with whole-number lengths, masses, weights, temperatures or liquid volumes.

What Students Need to Do

Students choose suitable tools and units for length, mass, liquid volume, temperature, and time. They read measurement scales accurately and solve one-step or two-step problems using measured quantities.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a sensible tool and unit without prompting. They measure from zero, read scale marks correctly, label answers, and explain the operation used in a measurement problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may start measuring at the ruler’s edge instead of zero. They may confuse units or leave units off answers. Clock intervals and marked scales can also cause counting errors.

How to Assess It

Give each student a pencil and centimeter ruler. Ask them to measure the pencil, then solve: “A ribbon is 18 cm long and 7 cm is cut off. How much remains?”

   Set up stations with rulers, measuring cups, scales, and clocks, then have pairs measure objects and record each value with its unit.

   Ask, “Which unit and tool would you use to measure a desk, a water bottle, and recess time?” Have students explain each choice.

   Play Measurement Match by having students pair object cards with tool and unit cards, then check each match with a partner.

   Have students plan drinks for four classmates by measuring one serving, then finding the total amount needed.
