What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve story problems about length, mass, weight, temperature, and liquid volume. They choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, then give the answer with the correct measurement unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the needed operation, write an equation, and calculate accurately. They label the answer with the correct unit and explain how it fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from a keyword instead of using the situation. They may omit units, combine different units directly, or confuse the measured amount with the change in amount.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A cooler holds 24 liters. Six teams share the water equally. How many liters does each team get?” Require an equation, answer, and unit.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with rulers, balance scales, measuring cups, and thermometers, then have students measure objects and solve one operation problem at each station.
Ask students to write and solve two different measurement stories using the numbers 6 and 24, choosing different operations.
Play operation sort: students place measurement problem cards under addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, then solve one card from each group.
Use a class party plan where students calculate drink volume, table lengths, food weights, and temperature changes from a prepared information sheet.
