What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether to use a ruler, measuring tape, marked beaker, or thermometer for a given task. They position and read each tool accurately, then label the measurement with the correct unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a tool that fits the object or substance being measured. They use the tool correctly, read its scale, and report a reasonable measurement with the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a ruler for a curved or long object when a measuring tape would work better. They may start at the ruler’s edge instead of zero, misread scale intervals, or view liquid levels from above.

How to Assess It

Set out a pencil, colored water in a marked beaker, room-temperature water, a ruler, measuring tape, and thermometer. Students choose tools, measure each item, and record values with units.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations where students measure a pencil, colored water in a marked beaker, and water temperature, then record values with units.

  2. Ask students to write which tool fits a desk, curved bottle, beaker of juice, and bathwater, then explain each choice.

  3. Play Tool Match Relay: teams pair object cards with ruler, tape measure, marked beaker, or thermometer cards, then justify one match.

  4. Have students follow a drink recipe, measuring the container’s length, 150 milliliters of water, and the water temperature before mixing.
