Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.2.M.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.2.M.1.1
Estimate and measure the length of an object to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter or meter by selecting and using an appropriate tool.
- MA.2.M.1.2
Measure the lengths of two objects using the same unit and determine the difference between their measurements.
- MA.2.M.1.3
Solve one- and two-step real-world measurement problems involving addition and subtraction of lengths given in the same units.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use rulers, measuring tapes, and yardsticks to find and compare lengths in standard units. They estimate lengths and solve addition or subtraction problems about how long objects are.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a suitable tool and unit, line up the zero mark, and report the length with a unit label. They compare lengths and solve one-step addition or subtraction problems accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start at the ruler’s edge instead of the zero mark, leave gaps between units, or count tick marks rather than spaces. They may also mix units or choose feet for a small object.
How to Assess It
- Give students a pencil, a ruler, and this prompt: “Measure the pencil to the nearest inch, then draw a crayon 2 inches shorter.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a measurement station with rulers, yardsticks, classroom objects, and a recording sheet for estimates and actual lengths.
Ask students to write which unit they would use for a paper clip, desk, and hallway, then explain each choice.
Play Measurement Match by pairing object cards with reasonable length cards labeled in inches, feet, centimeters, or meters.
Plan a bookshelf space by measuring several books, adding their widths, and deciding whether they fit on a marked shelf section.
