What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate an object’s length, choose a sensible unit, and select a matching measuring tool. They measure from zero and round the result to the nearest whole unit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a ruler, yardstick, meter stick, or measuring tape that fits the object and unit. They make a reasonable estimate, measure from zero, and report the nearest whole unit correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may start at the ruler’s edge instead of the zero mark, count tick marks rather than spaces, or switch units while measuring. They may choose centimeters for a room or yards for a pencil without considering the object’s size.

How to Assess It

Give students a pencil and a ruler. Ask them to estimate its length in inches, measure to the nearest inch, and explain why inches fit the object.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out classroom objects and measuring tools, then have pairs estimate, choose a unit, measure, and record each result.

  2. Ask students to write which unit they would use for a shoe, doorway, playground, and paper clip, with one reason each.

  3. Play Measurement Match by having students pair object cards with tool and unit cards, then check three matches by measuring.

  4. Measure spaces for a classroom rug or bulletin board, then compare whether feet, yards, or meters give the clearest result.
