What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate an object’s length in inches before using a ruler. They measure to the nearest whole inch or centimeter and label the answer with the correct unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a reasonable estimate before measuring. They align one end with zero, read the correct scale, and state the length with the correct unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may start at the ruler’s edge instead of zero, count tick marks, or leave gaps when using unit cubes. They may mix inches and centimeters or treat an estimate as an exact answer.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a crayon and a ruler. Ask, “Estimate the crayon’s length in inches, then measure it to the nearest inch and centimeter.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students estimate and measure pencils, crayons, and glue sticks with inch and centimeter rulers, recording both results in a table.
Ask, “Which classroom object is about six inches long?” Students name an object, explain their estimate, then check with a ruler.
Play Measurement Match by pairing object cards with estimated lengths, then award a point when ruler measurements confirm a reasonable match.
Measure items from a school supply order, such as folders and scissors, to decide whether they fit inside a pencil box.
