What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice features that can be measured, such as length, height, weight, and capacity. They compare two objects and describe the result with clear measurement words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a measurable feature and compare two objects fairly. They use words such as longer, shorter, taller, heavier, lighter, holds more, or holds less.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call an object “bigger” without naming the attribute they mean. They may compare length without lining up endpoints, or assume a taller object is also heavier.

How to Assess It

Give each student a pencil and a crayon. Ask, “Which is longer, and how did you make a fair comparison?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out classroom objects for students to compare by length, height, weight, and capacity using direct side-by-side tests.

  2. Ask, “How can one object be taller but lighter than another?” and have students explain with an example.

  3. Play Attribute Sort by having students place object cards under labels such as longer, shorter, heavier, and lighter.

  4. Compare lunch containers to decide which holds more, then test predictions by filling each with linking cubes.
