What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare two objects by checking the same feature, such as length, weight, or capacity. They describe the result with clear comparison words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students line up, stack, pour, or balance two objects in a fair way. They correctly use words such as longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, more, or less.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare length without lining up the ends, or judge weight by size alone. They may also switch comparison words, calling the same object both longer and shorter.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two crayons of different lengths. Ask the student to compare them directly and say, “The red crayon is ___ than the blue crayon.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of ribbons to students, have them align one end, then name which ribbon is longer and which is shorter.
Show two classroom objects and ask, “Which attribute can we compare, and how can we prove the difference?”
Play Comparison Hunt, where partners find two objects and earn a point for making and explaining a fair comparison.
Compare two lunch containers by filling each with cubes, then discuss which container holds more and which holds less.
