What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which objects are longer, shorter, or the same length by lining them up or using another object as a reference. They place as many as three objects in order by length.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students align endpoints and correctly identify which object is longer, shorter, or the same length. They use a third object, such as a strip of paper, to compare items that cannot be moved together.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare objects without lining up one endpoint. They may confuse taller with longer, or assume a bent object is shorter than a straight one. Some reverse shortest and longest when ordering three objects.
How to Assess It
- Give each student three paper strips and ask them to place the strips from shortest to longest, then explain how they checked.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three ribbons to align at one endpoint, compare, and arrange from shortest to longest.
Ask, “Mia’s pencil is longer than Ben’s, and Ben’s is longer than Lee’s. Whose pencil is shortest?”
Play Length Lineup with three classroom objects, asking students to predict the order, check by aligning, and earn a point for accuracy.
Have students find three items from a backpack, order them by length, and explain how size affects where each item fits.
