What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use square tiles or a grid to show the rows and columns inside a rectangle. They connect the model to multiplication and report the result in square units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses rows and columns to explain why length times width gives the total number of square units. The student calculates accurately and labels the answer in square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the side lengths instead of multiplying them. They may count grid lines rather than square units, or write units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Give students a grid showing a rectangle 4 units by 6 units. Ask them to label the dimensions, write a multiplication equation, and state the area with correct units.

Ways to Teach It
Give students square tiles to build 3-by-7 and 5-by-6 rectangles, then record each model, multiplication equation, and area.
Show a 4-by-8 grid rectangle and ask, "How does the picture prove that 4 × 8 gives the area?"
Play Area Match with cards showing rectangles, dimensions, multiplication equations, and areas for students to sort into matching sets.
Have students measure a rectangular book cover to the nearest whole inch, sketch a grid model, and calculate its area.
