What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students draw or interpret rectangles with fractional or decimal side lengths. They find perimeter by adding all sides or using a formula, and find area by multiplying length by width.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select the correct formula and calculate accurately with fractional or decimal side lengths. They label perimeter with linear units and area with square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the side lengths to find area or multiply them to find perimeter. They may forget to double each dimension, calculate decimals incorrectly, or label area with linear units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A rectangle measures 2.5 meters by 1.2 meters. Draw a labeled model, then find its perimeter and area with correct units.

Ways to Teach It
Use grid paper to draw a 3.5 cm by 2.5 cm rectangle, then calculate and label its perimeter and area.
Ask students to explain how a rectangle can have an area smaller than one of its side lengths.
Match cards showing rectangle dimensions, visual models, perimeter values, and area values, then justify each completed set.
Plan fencing and soil for a 4.5 meter by 2.75 meter garden, calculating perimeter and area separately.
