What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use side lengths written as fractions or decimals to calculate the distance around a rectangle and the space inside it. They distinguish linear units from square units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operation, calculate accurately, and simplify fractions or place decimals correctly. They label perimeter with linear units and area with square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply for both measures or add only one length and one width for the boundary. They may misplace decimal points, mishandle unlike denominators, or use square units for perimeter.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A rectangular garden is 3.5 meters long and 2 1/4 meters wide. Find its perimeter and area, and label each answer with units.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and grid paper to draw a 3.5 cm by 2.5 cm rectangle, then calculate its boundary and covered space.
Ask students to explain why multiplying the side lengths does not give the distance around a rectangle.
Play a card match game connecting rectangle dimensions to the correct perimeter and area cards.
Have students estimate flooring and baseboard needed for a rectangular room with decimal dimensions, then compare the two costs.
