What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use rectangle dimensions to find area and perimeter in number problems and real situations. They also work backward from a given area or perimeter to find an unknown side length.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operation based on what the problem asks. They find area, perimeter, or a missing side and label answers with linear or square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often mix up perimeter and area or use the wrong units. They may add side lengths for area, multiply for perimeter, or divide by the wrong known side when finding a missing length.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A rectangular garden has an area of 48 square feet and a width of 6 feet. Find its length and perimeter, and show your equations.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs grid paper and yarn to build rectangles, then measure and record each rectangle’s area, perimeter, and any missing side.
Ask students to explain in writing how they decide whether a word problem requires area, perimeter, or both.
Play a matching game with cards showing rectangles, dimensions, areas, perimeters, and unknown-side equations.
Have students plan a rectangular rug for a room using a fixed area, then calculate the border length needed.
