What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students solve rectangle problems by finding either the distance around a shape or the space inside it. They use side lengths, formulas, drawings, and correct units.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct calculation based on whether a problem asks for boundary length or covered space. They show accurate work and label perimeter in units and area in square units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply side lengths when finding perimeter or add them when finding area. They may calculate only length plus width for perimeter. They also confuse units with square units.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A rectangular rug is 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. Find its perimeter and area, label each answer, and show your calculations.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs square tiles and string; they build rectangles, measure side lengths, then record each rectangle’s area and perimeter.

  2. Ask, “Can two rectangles have the same area but different perimeters?” Students draw examples and explain their reasoning in writing.

  3. Play Rectangle Match with cards showing dimensions, areas, and perimeters; students form correct sets and justify each match.

  4. Have students plan a rectangular garden with 24 feet of fencing, then calculate its area and compare possible designs.
