What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create and compare rectangles that share an area or a perimeter. They calculate missing measurements and explain how changing side lengths affects area and perimeter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a perimeter, students list possible whole-number side lengths and calculate each area. Given an area, they use factor pairs to find rectangles, calculate perimeters, and explain the differences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume equal perimeters always produce equal areas, or equal areas always produce equal perimeters. They may use length plus width for perimeter, confuse square units with linear units, or miss factor pairs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw two rectangles with perimeter 20 units and different areas. Then draw two rectangles with area 24 square units and different perimeters.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 square tiles; students build every possible rectangle, record side lengths, and trace each perimeter on grid paper.
Ask students to explain why a 1-by-12 rectangle and a 3-by-4 rectangle have equal area but different perimeters.
Play Rectangle Match with cards showing dimensions, areas, or perimeters; students pair cards that share area or perimeter and justify each match.
Have students compare rectangular dog pens using 24 meters of fencing and choose dimensions that provide the greatest area.
