What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a problem asks for the distance around a rectangle or the space inside it. They use a labeled drawing and a formula to find the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students draw and label a rectangle, then choose the correct measurement for the situation. They calculate accurately with P = 2 × (length + width) and A = length × width, using correct units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply side lengths when asked for perimeter, or add them when asked for area. Some count only two sides for perimeter. Others label area with units instead of square units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A garden is 8 feet long and 3 feet wide. Draw a model, then find the fencing needed and the soil covered using formulas.

Ways to Teach It
Build rectangles with square tiles, trace each outline, then record side lengths, perimeter, area, and both formulas.
Show a rectangle with sides 4 and 7, then ask, “How can 22 units and 28 square units both describe it?”
Give pairs rectangle cards and measurement cards; students match each rectangle to its correct perimeter and area, then check with a partner.
Plan a rectangular garden using whole-number side lengths, then calculate the fencing needed and the number of square feet planted.
