What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use unit cubes or a drawing to count cubes in one layer and the number of layers. They connect that model to multiplying the prism’s three dimensions and report cubic units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect the number of cubes in one layer to the number of equal layers. They calculate accurately with length times width times height and label the result in cubic units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the three dimensions instead of multiplying them. They may count visible cubes only, confuse volume with surface area, or leave off cubic units.
How to Assess It
- Give students a drawing of a prism labeled 6 units by 4 units by 3 units. Ask them to show a cube layer, write an equation, and find the volume with cubic units.

Ways to Teach It
Build several prisms with unit cubes, sketch each prism, and record its dimensions and volume in a table.
Show two different prisms with the same volume and ask students to explain how both dimension sets produce the same product.
Play Volume Match by pairing prism cards, dimension cards, and volume cards, then have students justify each completed set.
Design a shipping box for 48 one inch cubes, then list three possible sets of whole number dimensions. Allow rotations and different layer arrangements.
