What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read tally charts, tables, pictographs, and bar graphs by using titles, labels, and keys. They find totals and differences by adding or subtracting category values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately find category counts and compare them. They use addition or subtraction to answer questions and explain how the display supports each answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count a group of five tally marks as one. They may ignore a pictograph key or read the wrong bar label. Some add when a question asks how many more or fewer.
How to Assess It
- Display a bar graph showing 7 students chose cats, 4 chose dogs, and 3 chose fish. Ask, “How many chose cats or fish, and how many more chose cats than dogs?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs tally cards, linking cubes, and category labels, then have them build the data and answer three comparison questions.
Show a pictograph and ask, “Which category has the most, and how does the key prove your answer?”
Play Graph Detective by giving teams data displays and question cards worth points for correct equations and answers.
Survey class snack choices, make a bar graph, and calculate how many students chose two selected snacks altogether.
