What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share ideas, needs, and experiences so others can understand them. They listen to a speaker, take turns, and respond with related words or questions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students share an idea in a clear voice using complete thoughts and useful details. They take turns, listen to others, and answer a related question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking louder always makes them clearer. They may interrupt, give one-word answers, or respond without listening to the speaker.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student, “What is one thing you like to do after school, and why?” Check for an audible voice, a complete thought, and relevant detail.

Ways to Teach It
Place an object in a mystery bag, then have students feel it and describe its shape, texture, and possible use to a partner.
Ask, “Which classroom job would you choose, and why?” Partners listen, then repeat one detail from each other’s answer.
Play Pass the Question with a soft ball, where each catcher answers a simple prompt and asks the next student a related question.
Set up a pretend restaurant where students order food, ask for clarification, and respond politely as customers and servers.
