What Students Need to Do

Students speak clearly about a topic, event, or text. They organize ideas in a sensible order and add relevant details. They listen, take turns, and respond to others.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can give a brief, understandable explanation or retell without drifting off topic. The student uses an audible voice, complete sentences, and relevant details. The student listens and gives a related response.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think speaking louder is the same as speaking clearly. Others give disconnected details or skip the order of events. They may interrupt instead of listening and responding.

How to Assess It

Give each student three picture cards and say, "Put these in order, then tell what happened using clear details." Check sequence, volume, clarity, and complete sentences.

   Give pairs four picture cards to sequence, then have each student tell the story while the partner checks order and clear speech.

   Ask, "What makes a speaker easy to understand?" Students discuss examples, then write two speaking tips.

   Play Mystery Object, where students describe a classroom item without naming it and classmates guess from the spoken clues.

4. 04

   Have students prepare and deliver a 30-second morning announcement about a class event, including what, when, where, and one helpful detail.
