What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share ideas, stories, and information aloud in clear, complete sentences. They listen to others, take turns, ask relevant questions, and respond to what they hear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students speak clearly at an appropriate volume and organize their ideas in a sensible order. They listen without interrupting, answer questions, and respond directly to another speaker's idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may speak too softly, leave out key details, or jump between ideas. They may interrupt, look away, or give a response that does not connect to what a classmate said.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture and ask each student to describe what is happening in two complete sentences. Check for clear volume, logical details, and an answer to one follow-up question.

Play Mystery Object by having one student describe a classroom item without naming it while classmates listen and guess.
Set up a pretend restaurant where students practice greeting a server, ordering clearly, listening to questions, and answering politely.
