What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and deliver clear spoken messages for a specific audience and purpose. They organize ideas, support claims with evidence, use effective delivery, and respond thoughtfully to questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students present a focused message with a clear opening, logical points, and relevant evidence. They speak clearly, adjust tone and pace for the audience, and answer questions directly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides word for word, speak too quickly, or rely on filler words. They may state opinions without evidence or ignore questions that challenge their main point.

How to Assess It

Give students one minute to explain whether the school day should start later, using one clear claim and two relevant details. Check organization, evidence, pace, and response to one follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs claim and evidence cards, then have them arrange the cards and deliver a two-minute presentation without reading a script.

  2. Ask students to record a one-minute response to, "What makes a speaker credible?" and support it with one specific example.

  3. Run a filler-word challenge where partners track pauses, repeated phrases, eye contact, and pacing during short impromptu talks.

  4. Have students deliver a mock city council comment proposing one local change and answer two audience questions.
