What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and deliver a focused oral presentation for a clear audience and purpose. They arrange ideas in a logical order and support points with trustworthy evidence. They use devices such as repetition, parallel structure, or rhetorical questions when those choices strengthen the message.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student delivers a focused presentation with a clear opening, ordered points, and a purposeful conclusion. Evidence comes from trustworthy sources and is explained. Rhetorical devices strengthen key ideas without replacing sound reasoning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts without explaining how they support the main point. They may rely on weak sources, shift topics, or repeat the same idea. Some use rhetorical questions or repetition so often that the devices become distracting.

How to Assess It

Give students five minutes to prepare a one-minute response: “Should schools limit student phone use?” Require one clear position, two credible details, and one rhetorical device.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed claim, evidence, counterclaim, and conclusion cards to arrange, then use the sequence for a 60-second presentation.

  2. Write and discuss: Which rhetorical device would best strengthen a speech asking the principal to change one school policy, and why?

  3. Run a two-minute speech relay where each student adds one connected point and cites evidence without losing the group’s focus.

  4. Have students present a school board proposal about start times, using district data and testimony from a credible local expert.
