What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare and give a focused oral presentation built around one clear viewpoint. They arrange ideas in a sensible order and use trustworthy evidence to support each main point.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student opens with a clear position, develops points in a sensible order, and closes by reinforcing the main idea. Each point includes relevant evidence from a trustworthy source and supports the same perspective.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without connecting them to a main point. They may use weak sources, shift positions, or arrange ideas in the order they found them rather than a logical sequence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two minutes to present a position on a school issue using one credible source. Check for a clear claim, logical order, connected evidence, and consistent viewpoint.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, evidence, explanation, and conclusion cards to arrange, then have them deliver the resulting one-minute speech.
Ask students to write a one-sentence position on school uniforms, then explain which two reasons would best support it and why.
Run a sixty-second speech relay where partners score each speaker for focus, order, source credibility, and connection between evidence and claim.
Have students record a public service announcement about a local concern using one government or nonprofit source and a clear call to action.
