What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver a focused talk with a clear main point, ordered ideas, and useful transitions. They use reliable evidence and explain their viewpoint.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Listeners can follow the opening, main points, and conclusion without getting lost. The speaker cites reliable evidence, explains its relevance, and keeps a consistent viewpoint.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the main point. They may rely on weak sources, shift positions, or read slides word for word.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to give a 90-second talk that includes one main claim, two credible facts, transitions, and a closing statement. Use a four-item checklist.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence cards from a short speech and have them arrange the opening, evidence, explanation, transitions, and conclusion.
Ask students to write and share a claim about school phones, then explain which evidence would make the claim convincing.
Run a two-minute speech relay where students earn points for a claim, sourced evidence, explanation, transition, and conclusion.
Have students present a proposal for improving one school space, using survey results or school data to support the recommendation.
