What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan a spoken presentation with a clear opening, connected points, and a purposeful ending. They choose trustworthy facts or quotations and explain how each supports their main message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student opens with a focused point, presents connected ideas in a sensible order, and ends with a clear conclusion. The student uses reliable sources and explains why each detail matters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they connect to the main point. They may also trust the first source they find or arrange ideas in the order gathered.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source excerpts and ask them to deliver a 60-second response with a clear claim, two supporting details, and a conclusion.

Ask students to write and discuss: Which source best supports the speaker’s point, and what makes that source trustworthy?
Play Presentation Puzzle by giving groups mixed-up speech notes to sequence before one member presents them aloud.
Students prepare a two-minute proposal for a school improvement, using one statistic and one quotation from reliable sources.
