What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and deliver a short talk with a clear main message. They arrange supporting points in an order listeners can follow and signal which details matter most.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a focused message, presents relevant evidence in a sensible order, and closes by reinforcing the message. Transitions, pacing, volume, or repetition make key points stand out.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts in the order they found them instead of grouping them around one message. They may use loud volume for every detail or omit transitions that guide listeners.
How to Assess It
- Give students three minutes to prepare a 60-second talk answering, “Should school start later?” Require one claim, two ordered reasons, a transition, and clear emphasis.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs five fact cards about one topic, then have them arrange the cards and deliver a one-minute talk in that order.
Ask students to write three ways a speaker can show listeners that a point matters, then compare answers with a partner.
Play Presentation Relay, where students add one ordered point at a time and must use a transition before passing to the next speaker.
Have students record a 30-second morning announcement that states one message, gives details in order, and highlights the action listeners should take.
