What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students organize ideas before speaking so listeners can follow them. They use a clear voice, careful pronunciation, eye contact, posture, and gestures that fit the message.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a short talk with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The student speaks loudly enough, pronounces words clearly, and uses eye contact, posture, or gestures to support the message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may speak too softly, rush, or read every word from a page. They may share details out of order or use gestures that distract listeners.

How to Assess It

Give students three minutes to prepare a 45-second explanation of a familiar routine. Check for clear order, audible volume, clear words, and helpful eye contact or gestures.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards showing a process, then have them order the cards and present the steps to a partner.

  2. Ask students to write three speaking tips, then discuss which tip helps an audience understand a message most.

  3. Play Speaker Coach, where partners give one specific suggestion about sequence, volume, pronunciation, or eye contact after each short talk.

  4. Have students present morning announcements, explain classroom directions, or give a brief weather report using a clear sequence and delivery.
