What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share facts or ideas aloud so listeners can follow them. They speak in full thoughts, loudly enough for the room, and pronounce words clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a short, organized explanation that listeners can understand the first time. The student uses complete thoughts, steady volume, and a clear speaking pace.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use sentence fragments, speak too softly, or rush through words. Some confuse clear speech with shouting or think every familiar word needs no explanation.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to explain how to make a favorite snack in three complete sentences. Check sentence completion, volume, pace, and pronunciation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place an object in a bag, then have students feel it and give three clear clues so classmates can identify it.

  2. Ask students to explain one classroom rule and why it helps, using three complete sentences.

  3. Play Speaker Coach in pairs, where one student speaks and the other checks sentence completion, volume, pace, and pronunciation.

  4. Have students role-play giving a clear announcement about a missing lunchbox, including its appearance and where it was last seen.
