What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share an idea, observation, or answer aloud as a complete thought. They name who or what they mean and tell an action or description.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can study a picture or object and tell one clear fact about it. The response names who or what and gives an action or description.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give one-word answers or short phrases, such as “the dog” or “running.” They may leave out who is acting or what is happening.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of children at a playground. Ask, “Tell me one thing that is happening,” and listen for a complete sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place objects in a mystery bag, then have each student pull one out and describe it with a complete sentence.

  2. Ask partners, “What do you like to do after school?” and require each answer to name the activity in a complete sentence.

  3. Read phrases and complete sentences aloud, then have students hold up a green card only when they hear a complete thought.

  4. Let each student give a one-sentence morning report about the weather, lunch, or a classroom event.
