What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan a short talk so ideas or steps come in an order listeners can follow. They speak clearly and use volume, eye contact, posture, and gestures that fit the message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a short talk that listeners can follow without asking what came first or next. The student speaks clearly, adjusts volume, and uses eye contact, posture, and gestures to support the message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may jump between ideas or leave out needed steps. They may confuse good volume with shouting, rush words, stare at notes, or use gestures that distract listeners.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to give a 60-second explanation of how to complete a familiar task. Check for ordered steps, clear speech, suitable volume, and purposeful eye contact or gestures.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed-up picture cards of a simple process, then have them arrange the cards and present the steps with matching gestures.
Ask, “What makes a speaker easy to follow?” Students name one delivery move and explain how it helps listeners.
Play Volume Coach: one student speaks, while partners show one, two, or three fingers to request a volume adjustment.
Have students record a 30-second morning announcement about a class event, then replay it and revise unclear words or distracting movements.
