What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students communicate ideas clearly in speeches, discussions, and responses to questions. They organize points, support claims, and adapt their delivery to the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students present a focused message with logical organization and relevant evidence. They adjust volume, pace, word choice, and responses to fit the audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides aloud, speak too quickly, or rely on filler words. They may offer opinions without evidence or ignore questions that challenge their claims.

How to Assess It

Give students two minutes to explain a school policy they would change, using one clear claim and two supporting details. Score organization, evidence, delivery, and response to one follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three note cards to plan, record, and revise a one-minute explanation after checking pace, volume, eye contact, and evidence.

  2. Ask students to discuss which delivery choice most affects credibility, then support their answer with an example from a recorded speech.

  3. Run a claim-evidence-response relay where students draw a topic, state a claim, add evidence, and answer a partner’s follow-up question.

  4. Have students deliver a two-minute workplace update that explains a problem, proposes a solution, and answers one question from the audience.
