What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share information and ideas clearly when speaking to others. They organize their points, use an appropriate volume and pace, and respond thoughtfully during conversations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students present ideas in a logical order with clear speech, suitable volume, and relevant details. They listen carefully, respond to questions, and adjust their words for the audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may speak too softly, rush, or read every word from notes. They may share ideas without a clear order or ignore questions from listeners.
How to Assess It
- Give students one minute to explain a familiar process, such as packing a lunch. Check for clear order, audible speech, eye contact, and relevant details.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an object and three detail cards, then have each student deliver a 30-second description using the cards in order.
Ask, "What makes a speaker easy to understand?" and have students support each suggestion with an example.
Play Speaker Switch, where students continue a shared explanation while maintaining the same topic, clear sequence, and suitable volume.
Have students record a one-minute school announcement about an upcoming event, then revise it after a partner gives feedback.
