What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and deliver clear spoken messages for a purpose and audience. They support ideas with relevant details, use effective delivery, and respond thoughtfully to listeners.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students present a clear claim with organized reasons and relevant evidence. They use an audible voice, suitable pace, and appropriate language, then answer questions directly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides word for word, speak too quickly, or rely on filler words. They may also give opinions without evidence or ignore questions from listeners.

How to Assess It

Give students two minutes to prepare a 60-second claim about a school issue, supported by one fact or example. Check organization, evidence, volume, pace, and eye contact.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs topic cards and three sticky notes to plan an opening, evidence point, and closing before delivering a one-minute talk.

  2. Ask students to discuss which delivery choice, pace, volume, eye contact, or wording, most affects an audience and explain why.

  3. Run a filler-word challenge where students speak for 30 seconds while partners tally repeated words, pauses, and clear transitions.

  4. Have students record a short public service announcement about a school concern for a specific audience, such as students, families, or administrators.
