What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize ideas before speaking and share them in a clear, logical order. They use an audible voice, suitable pace, and relevant details. They listen to questions and respond directly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give a brief talk with a clear opening, connected points, and a closing. The student speaks clearly, stays on topic, and answers follow-up questions with relevant information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking louder is the same as speaking clearly, or that fast speech sounds more prepared. They may read every word from notes, skip a clear sequence, or answer questions without connecting to the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give students one minute to prepare and 45 seconds to explain a familiar classroom routine. Check for logical order, clear speech, relevant details, and a direct answer to one follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange sentence strips into an opening, three supporting points, and a closing, then use the sequence to give a one-minute talk.
Ask, “Should fourth graders have homework?” Students state a claim, give two reasons, and respond to one classmate’s question.
Play Speaker Switch: students draw audience and purpose cards, then repeat the same message with suitable volume, word choice, and detail.
Record a 30-second school announcement about an upcoming event, including who, what, when, where, and a clear speaking pace.
