What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and deliver clear spoken messages for a specific purpose and audience. They organize ideas, support points with relevant details, and use understandable volume, pace, tone, and body language.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a focused presentation with a clear opening, logical details, and a closing. The student uses suitable volume, pace, eye contact, and language for the audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may speak too softly, read every word from notes, or present ideas in no clear order. They may confuse speaking quickly with speaking fluently or include details that do not fit the topic or audience.

How to Assess It

Give students two minutes to prepare a 45-second response to: “Should sixth graders have homework every night?” Check for a clear claim, two supporting reasons, audible speech, and steady pacing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use topic cards and three labeled cups, opening, evidence, and closing, to sort ideas before students deliver a one-minute talk.

  2. Ask students to write and discuss which speaking choices would change when addressing classmates, younger children, or the principal.

  3. Play Speaker Coach, where partners draw cards naming one skill, such as volume or pacing, then give feedback after a 30-second talk.

  4. Have students record a 45-second school announcement about an event, using clear facts, suitable tone, and an audience-friendly closing.
