What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize and deliver ideas clearly for a specific audience and purpose. They use relevant evidence, effective pacing, appropriate language, and active listening when responding to others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students present a focused message with a clear sequence, relevant evidence, and language suited to the audience. They speak clearly, listen closely, and respond directly to questions or opposing views.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read slides word for word, speak too quickly, or rely on filler words. They may share opinions without evidence or ignore questions that challenge their point.
How to Assess It
- Give students 60 seconds to explain a school issue, support their position with one specific example, and answer one follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs topic cards and three minutes to build a 60-second speech using an opening, evidence, and closing.
Ask students to discuss which speaking habits build credibility, then write two specific goals for their next presentation.
Run a filler-word challenge where partners track words such as “um” and “like,” then repeat the response with fewer fillers.
Have students record a mock voicemail requesting a schedule change, using a clear reason, respectful tone, and specific next step.
