What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read nonfiction closely to determine central ideas, claims, purpose, and structure. They select relevant evidence and explain how details develop meaning or support an author’s reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a central idea and trace how the author develops it with facts, examples, and quotations. They explain the author’s purpose, text structure, and claims using precise evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may copy a sentence as evidence without explaining how it supports an inference or claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and ask: “State the central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain how each detail supports it.”

Ways to Teach It
Cut an article into sections, then have groups arrange the sections and label how each one develops the central idea.
After reading an editorial, write one paragraph explaining the author’s purpose and support the answer with two quoted phrases.
Run an evidence sort relay where teams match claims, supporting details, and explanations from a shared article.
Compare a school policy with a news report about the same issue, then identify differences in purpose, evidence, and audience.
