What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level nonfiction and determine the central idea, key details, structure, and author’s purpose. They evaluate claims and explain ideas using evidence from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the central idea and support it with relevant details. They explain how sections, text features, evidence, and word choices shape meaning and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may treat every statement as fact, ignore text features, or name a purpose without evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page article. Ask them to state the central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain how one section supports the author’s purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Cut an article into sections, then have students rebuild it and label the job each section does.
Compare two short accounts of one event and write which author seems more reliable, using two details.
Play Claim Check by sorting article statements into supported claims, unsupported claims, facts, and opinions.
Analyze a school announcement or news article to identify its audience, purpose, central idea, and strongest evidence.
