  Use titles, headings, and illustrations to predict and confirm the topic of texts.

  Identify the topic of and multiple details in a text.

  Explain the difference between opinions and facts about a topic.

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to or read simple nonfiction and identify the topic and supporting details. They connect related information, compare pictures with words, and tell facts from opinions.

What Mastery Looks Like

After a short read-aloud, the student names the topic and at least two accurate details. The student connects related information, explains what a picture adds, and sorts simple facts from opinions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name one interesting detail instead of the overall topic. They may treat every printed statement as a fact, or repeat a picture detail without explaining what the words add.

How to Assess It

Read a short nonfiction page aloud. Ask students to name the topic, give two details, connect two ideas, and label one statement as fact or opinion.

   Give pairs a nonfiction page, sticky notes, and picture cards to mark the topic, two details, and information shown only in pictures.

   Read a short animal text, then ask, “What is it mostly about, and which two details helped you decide?”

   Play Fact or Opinion Corners by reading statements aloud and having students move to a labeled corner, then explain their choice.

4. 04

   Examine a classroom weather chart and forecast, then identify facts, opinions, connected details, and information shown through pictures or words.
