What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of nonfiction by finding the central idea and relevant details. They explain how text features and structures shape meaning, then examine perspective, claims, reasons, and evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the central idea and support it with relevant details. They explain text structure, text features, the author’s perspective, and how reasons and evidence support a claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may name a text feature or structure without explaining how it helps the reader, or confuse a claim with a fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page article. Ask them to state the central idea, cite two supporting details, identify the structure, and explain one text feature.
