What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine how headings, captions, diagrams, bold words, and other features help readers understand information. They recognize problem and solution, sequence, and description using details and signal words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly identify the main organization of a passage using details and signal words. They explain how a specific feature clarifies, adds, or organizes information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a heading, caption, or diagram without explaining what it helps the reader understand. They may confuse sequence with description or label any mention of difficulty as problem and solution.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with a heading, caption, and diagram. Ask them to label its organization and explain how one feature adds meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut apart an article, then have pairs place its heading, caption, and diagram where they belong and explain each choice.

  2. Read a short article and respond: Which organization does the author use, and what details prove your answer?

  3. Play a card sort using passage cards labeled problem and solution, sequence, or description, then check answers with signal-word cards.

  4. Examine a weather page and explain how its headings, map, labels, and captions help readers find and understand information.
